This is my version of a portable chess game

Update 5-2-2024:

I noticed that the model files of game pieces with a logo were different then on my pictures. Somehow during the design process that changed. I uploaded older models where the logo's are different. It might help to determine which piece is black and which piece is white. The added model files are marked as “alternative”. All the pieces are in one gcodefile and 3mf. Be aware the latest codes are for the Mk4 printer.

I take it that everyone interested knows the rules of the chess game. When not you can easily find it in the internet ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess )

All my travel games have the same size. That makes them easily stackable. They are small enough to put them in your backpack etc. Because of the design you can play these games  in a car, train or plane while traveling. (you don't have to charge a battery for it…. ;-)

There are 2 sets of game pieces. One with simple symbols on top, and one derived from the standard pieces, but so that they are printable in this small size with a 0.4 mm nozzle and 0.1 layer height. So take your pick.

The lid has been designed in such way that it is easily taken off to use as a tray to hold the unused or not yet used pieces.

I printed the parts with 0.2 mm layer in PLA. The smaller parts (latch and game pieces) with 0.1 mm layer.

The bottom part is printed with a color change for the last few layers to make the game field better visible and to improve “optics”.

Set one of the game pieces (16) have a color change for the last few layers, to make the symbol better visible. (Black for the white, and white for the black pieces….) Of course you can also paint the top layers after printing easily.

The other set of game pieces is without a color change. Print them in black and white (or any contrasting colours you like)

It is best to glue the clamp to the lid.

You can use pieces of filament for the hinge. Probably you have to ream the holes with a 1.8 mm drill and you have to sand the hinges a bit for smooth operations. The tolerances are tight.

When you print this design, please post it.

Of course you are completely free to use my designs non commercially, but if…. you want to support me buy me a coffee.
