11-30-2022 Update - See the New Version of the GSTP (Gameboard Segment Test Print). New STLs and a pre-sliced file have been included

Update: Added a photo to show the size of the gameboard - it includes the industry standard “Toaster Pastry Scaling Device” (known as TPSD) in the picture.

2-4 players dropped in different areas of the galaxy, must obtain a Stargate to get home! Along the way, you will buy Chevron’s, DHD’s, and GDO’s. Purchases are made using Naquadah Bricks!

Stargate – Uniting The Planets

After making a Stratego-stylized Stargate game, using a standard chess-style board – I wanted to build a Stargate game using the Stargate itself.  An open ended Stargate game, with virtually no limits on expansion. This is that game:

I had some criteria for the new game:

  1. Easy to print – no supports for ANY of the parts.
  2. Multi-colored parts with no need for an MMU
  3. Expandable – able to add to the existing game, and even make up new rules for the game
  4. Use the Stargate itself as the gameboard
  5. Pieces and parts should remind you of board games from the 70’s
  6. 2-4 players

I wrote some basic rules for the game – but this game has no limits! In the future, I plan to add more modules, and may even write up some different ways to play (maybe you can do the same). I was even thinking of making a Midway Module so we can travel to Atlantis. The rules that I wrote do not take into account the countless enemies (the Goal’d, the Ori, or the Wraith), these can easily be added into the game with another set of Gatecards, or with additional modules.

Printing the Board & Game Parts

While it may take a while to print some of the parts – nothing is difficult to print! All of the parts can be made with PLA (I used Inland PLA+).

The Gameboard:
The main gameboard consists of 8 segments, that fit together like a puzzle forming the giant board. The main board is broken into 39 cells containing the same Chevron's on the “real” Stargate. Smaller joiners link the board with the SGC (Stargate Command) at the center. Four Stargates line the outside with a fifth one at the SGC. A ring platform is located on one end of the board. This allows travel to other modules with a ring platform attached. A Gatecard holder can be swapped out for one or more of the 4 joiners (The cards provide the players with more problems or solutions along the way).

The Eight segments of the gameboard. Segment #1 is at the top, center, segment #2 is to the right and the count continues clockwise.

Update 11-30-2022 - The previous GSTP that was uploaded had a tighter fit then the actual gameboard parts - I have now uploaded a new one that matches the game pieces!

Note: Because the gameboard segments can be a close fit, I have included a GSTP (Gameboard Segment Test Print) to check fit in advance of printing the gameboard. If this file prints okay, and you can connect the two parts, you should be good to print the gameboard. This file can be printed in any sort of scrap filament!

If this prints correctly, you should be good to go on most parts!

11-30-2022 - Spacing of the original Test Print was .04mm - the New Version has a spacing of .16 - Matching the rest of the prints in the series!

Accessory Parts:

The Accessory parts include dice, pawns, a Stargate iris (for the SGC), and Chevron &Stargate ownership tokens.

Stargate Dice:

While a pair of dice are required for the game, you can either print mine (or just get a pair from somewhere). I printed mine with Inland Black PLA+ and Inland Silk Gold PLA. This is a two color pair of dice, printed in two parts, assembled on the printer. Here are the steps;

First, print “dice inner block” with Silk Gold, remove from the printer, keeping the orientation the same (set aside). Print the “dice frame”, adding a pause to your print at 18.50 (I just added a color change). With the print paused, slide the “dice inner block” inside the “dice frame” (it should sit flush). Resume the print, and the block will be sealed inside – a nice dice. This is the toughest of the prints, but still no supports!

See more details about my dice on Prusa Printers here:

https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/73150-shaky-dice-stargate-dice

Chevron Ownership Tokens:
Single color Red, Blue, Yellow, & Green (30 of each color).

Stargate/Rings Ownership Tokens:

The Stargate/Rings Ownership Tokens for the game are printed in four colors (a single color for each type). I printed mine in Inland Red PLA+, Inland Blue PLA+, Inland Yellow PLA+, and . To match the color of the pawns.

Stargate/Rings Ownership Tokens:
Single color Red, Blue, Yellow, & Green (2-6 of each color).

GateCards:

The gatecards are used to provide additional challenges everytime you pass through a Stargate (or land in front of one). I am providing some basic PDFs that are compatible with Avery-style business card stock. I was able to get some for less then $10 that provide me with over 100 cards. Once printed, these cards easily break apart. These cards are what is used in the GateCard Holder.

Create your own GateCards:

Avery is a creator of all sorts of lables and business card stock. They have a free template that will work with various business card stock on the market.

https://www.avery.com/templates/category/business-cards?gclid=CjwKCAjwx8iIBhBwEiwA2quaqwIfLrz7_6i3QDV4qUDnCikbLzXiMDqPzgWlEeWzOEGh5sQSmggpZxoCWRMQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Load the template into your favorite software, and make up some New cards. Print them out on compatible card stock, and your good to go! I printed both the back and front of my cards. The special template lines everything perfectly on their stock.

Want to make your GateCards even better - round of the corners of your cards with a Fiskars (or other brand) corner punch - these can be found for less than $8 on Amazon

Playing the game

While I have written the basic rules of the game, these are a guidelines only! This game was designed to be expanded. If you print a second gameboard, you can have eight players, jumping between the boards! You may see some similarity with some of the “big box” games. I have designed this with expansion in mind. I am hoping that others make up their own games for use with this  basic set.

Basic Rules and How to play:

The game complete game consists of the following parts and accessories:
Gameboard - 8 segments
Joiners – 4 segments (or 3 if you are using either of the gatecard holders)
Gatecard Holder – 1 unit
SGC Module – 1 unit
SGC Stargate base (ramp) – 1 unit
SGC Stargate IRIS – 1 unit
Stargate base (staircase) – 6 units
Stargate (rings) – 6 units
Stargate Storage Module – 1 unit
GDO’s – 4 units
GDO Storage Module – 1 unit
Naquadah Generator – 4 units
Naquadah Generator Storage Module – 1 unit
Sarcophagous – 1 unit
Sarcophagous Storage Module – 1 unit
DHD’s – 5 units
DHD Storage Module – 1 unit
Transfer Station Module – 1 unit

Setting up the gameboard

Assemble the eight segments of the gameboard (see pictures),

add in the Joiners and the SGC center module (and the gatecard holder if you are going to use it).

Place the Stargate bases (four of them) at the four spots around the gameboard, and place the SGC base and Stargate in the center (press the IRIS in position as well). drop in the ring platform at the bottom of the board. This completes assembly of the main gameboard.

Setup the various modules:

Stargate Storage Module – place the four Stargates in the slots on the module, drop in a ring platform.
GDO Storage Module – Place the GDO’s on the module, add a Stargate and DHD
Naquadah Generator Storage Module – place the generators on the module, drop in a ring platform.
Sarcophagous Storage Module – Place the Sarcophagous in position, drop in a Stargate.
DHD Storage Module – put the DHD’s on the module, drop in a ring platform
Transfer Station Module – put a Stargate in the slot, and add a ring platform

Object of the game:
You have been dropped off on a planet that is missing it’s Stargate, with limited resources, you need to fix the Stargate and get it back in operation. Players buy Chevrons to make more loot, so they can get a Stargate, a Naquadah Generator, A DHD, and a GDO – you can not get home without a GDO! First one to make it back to Stargate Command is the winner.

Note about the rules: Instead of using money in this game, purchase and fees utilize Naquadah Bricks. The amounts that I have put together is an estimate only - these will probably need adjusted (fees, puchases, amount to start with, etc.) in order to provide the best game experience.

General Rules

Players 2-4
All players first choose a character (one of the four pawns).
Once their color is chosen, each player can collect the set of Chevron and Travel frames that match their pawn color. Each player also receives 50 Naquadah Bricks at the start of the game.

Roll the dice to see who goes first, second , third, etc. (high roller goes first)

Players one places their pawn on any of the empty Stargate bases – player two places their pawn on the next base, and each player continues around clockwise.

Player one rolls the dice, and travelling clockwise, works their way around the ring. The gate arrows are included in counts traveling to and from the gate bases and the ring platform.

If a player lands on an unclaimed Chevron, they can make a claim on it and buy it at that time. They can not buy it at the beginning of their next turn. Once purchased, a colored frame is placed on it, and play continues. If a player lands on a previously owned Chevron, they owe the owner a landing fee. Price of Chevrons & fees is shown below:

General Chevrons: 10 bricks / Landing fee 4 bricks
Chevrons too & from Stargates: Price 20 bricks / Landing fee 8 bricks
Chevron too & from the Ring Platform: Price 20 bricks / Landing fee 8 bricks
Earth Chevron (the Big “A”): Price 30 bricks / landing fee 16 bricks

If you land on the Ring Platform, you can immediately jump to one of the various modules, to buy what you need. After your purchase, you remain on the module until your next turn. On your next roll, you include the count form the module to the ring platform on the gameboard (you cannot travel to another module). Exception - rolling a seven allows travel to another module on your next turn

If you purchase a Stargate, place it on any of the empty staircase bases around the gameboard, and place a colored frame to show ownership. The frame protects your investment. Anyone traveling through your Stargate must pay a fee of 2 bricks – either direction. You may not travel through the gate until you add a Naquahda Generator (for manual dialing) or DHD (for automatic dialing). Once you have a gate in place, and ownership has been established, the SGC will send you 20 bricks everytime you pass it on your turn. You may exit from ANY gate in the system, even without a DHD or generator in place.

Here are the prices for the items on the modules:

Stargate – 30 bricks
Naquahda Generator – 30 bricks
DHD – 35 bricks
GDO – 40 bricks

(These prices are estimates only – these may need adjusted for better gameplay)

General Information about the equipment & modules:

Stargate

Used for travel between any other Stargate on the board. Gates can be dialed automaticaly with a DHD (Dial Home device) or manually with a Naquadah Generator.

When using the DHD, you may enter the gate on any roll (that leads you to a gate), your roll count is truncated when using the DHD. When manually dialing, you must land on the gate with the exact roll count.

When entering ANY gate, the player must draw a GateCard before traveling through the gate, and follow the instructions on the card.

DHD:

This is how you dial the gate to get home. You must use a DHD and travel through your Stargate to reach home (The SGC).

The DHD will autodial a gate that it is conencted to, and allow you to travel through any open gate (you dice roll is truncated as you enter a gate with a DHD)

Naquadah Generator:

This is how you dial the gate manually. You may travel through any gate that has this, but must land on the gate by exact count (including the gate arrows). If you have purchased a generator, it is assumed that you may take it with you, and use it on any gate.

Rings Platform:

The Rings Platform allows instant travel between the game board ring and modules. After travelling to a module, you must return to the gameboard on your next turn.

Exception: If you roll a seven (7) on your next turn, you can travel to another ring platform (returning to the gameboard on your next turn).

Sarcophogos:

The Sarcophogos is a healing device that is located on the Sarcophogos Module.

When hurt and visiting the device, you are out of the game unitl you return.

Chevron Ownership Tokens:

When you pruchase a Chevron, these are dropped in place (matching your pawn color) to show they are owned by you.

Anyone landing on your Chevron will owe you a fee.

A Chevron has been purchased! The buyer adds an Ownership Token to prove ownership

Stargate/Ring Ownership Tokens:

When you pruchase a Stargate, these are dropped in place (matching your pawn color) to show they are owned by you.

Anyone may travel via your Stargate - but can only get home to the SGC using their own.

A Stargate showing ownership with the addition of an Ownership Token

Stargate Storage Module:

This module is equipped with a ring platform, for travel to and from the gameboard. This iw where you can buy a Stargate. After traveling here, you must return to the gameboard on your next turn.

Exception: If you roll a seven (7) on your next turn, you can travel to another ring platform (returning to the gameboard on your next turn).

Naquadah Generator Module:

This module is equipped with a ring platform, for travel to and from the gameboard. This is where you can buy a Naquadah Generator. After traveling here, you must return to the gameboard on your next turn.

Exception: If you roll a seven (7) on your next turn, you can travel to another ring platform.

DHD Storage Module:

This module is equipped with a ring platform, for travel to and from the gameboard. After traveling here, you must return to the gameboard on your next turn.

Exception: If you roll a seven (7) on your next turn, you can travel to another ring platform (returning to the gameboard on your next turn).

Transfer Station:

This module is equipped with both a ring platform and a gate - this station allow you to travel from the gate system to the ring system (one way only), After traveling here, you may jump to another ring platform on your next turn (retuning to the gameboard on your following turn)

Exception: If you roll a seven (7) on your next turn, you can travel to another ring platform (returning to the gameboard on your next turn

Sarcophagos Module:

This module is used to repair YOU if you are injured (see GateCards).

When you arrive, you are out of the game (no collecting of fees) till you return.

In order to return to the game, you first skip a turn, then roll the dice on your next turn (the total is the fee). If you roll a seven (7) the fee is waived.

This is the ONLY gate that does not require a DHD or Generator. Player must return to a gate on the gameboard.

GateCard Holder:

This is where you place your GateCards. The two versions are interchangeable (you can either use businees card size or regular playing cards. When you travel by Stargate, pick up a GateCard before travelling through. The GateCard supercedes any move you are about to make. Some cards can be kept for use later on. They must be played at the beginning of your turn.

How I created this…

I use AutoCad (and sometimes TurboCAD) to generate almost all of my creations. I start by drawing different views of a 3D object in CAD, convert the files to DXF, and bring the files into Fusion 360. Most of my drawing occurs outside of Fusion.

I made multiple versions of the gameboard segments, the various accessories, and the modules - I printed them all…

And no, that's not nearly all of them…

Final Thoughts:

Yep, there is a lot here. This was one of my favorite prints so far, and one of my easiest (and no supports). If you have any trouble printing, or need some additional support, drop me a line or leave something in the comment section. Please enjoy & leave a comment!
